The future of biofungicide Bacillus subtilis
Bacillus subtilis, also known as Libao and Gran, is a kind of living microbial bacterial fungicide. Bacillus subtilis is widely used in field crops (rice, wheat, corn, peanuts, potatoes, tobacco, cotton), vegetable gardens (cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, eggplant, ginger), fruit orchards (strawberries, citrus trees, apple trees, bananas, watermelons, melons), Chinese medicinal materials (ginseng, Panax notoginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, Rehmannia glutinosa), and tea trees and other crops. It is highly effective against fungal diseases such as the class of flagellates, the class of pyrocomycetes, and the class of hyphomycetes of the class of Ascomycetes. It has excellent activity against a variety of fungal diseases such as cabbage root knot, potato late blight, apple powdery mildew, melon powdery mildew, apple anthracnose, wheat fusarium wilt, citrus green mold, tobacco brown spot, banana wilt, etc. After spraying, the pesticide secretes bactericidal active substances, inhibiting the germination of pathogen spores and the growth of mycelium, thereby protecting crops from pathogens, eliminating or reducing the stress of pathogens on crops, and increasing crop yields. This article mainly focuses on the registration status of microbial pesticide Bacillus subtilis in my country and its future trends.
Bacillus subtilis
Bacterial pesticides are insecticidal or fungicidal preparations composed of bacteria or their metabolites. They are highly selective, safe for humans, animals and natural enemies of pests, highly compatible with the ecological environment, not easy to develop resistance, simple production process, and low registration costs. They are widely developed and used in the field of pest control. As of April 26, 2024, there are 435 common microbial bacterial pesticide products with valid registration in my country, involving 35 major varieties, including 44 technical powders and 391 preparations; 411 PD pesticides, 0 EX pesticides, and 24 WP pesticides. Among microbial bacterial pesticides, Bacillus subtilis products account for 22.29% of the total number of common microbial bacterial pesticides.

Bacillus subtilis has no cross-resistance with existing registered fungicides and is the main agent for disease control in the plant protection market. Currently registered Bacillus subtilis preparations are mainly used in field crops (including rice, wheat, corn, peanuts, potatoes), vegetable gardens (including cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, eggplants, ginger), melon and fruit orchards (strawberries, citrus trees, apple trees, bananas, watermelons, melons), and Chinese medicinal materials (including ginseng, Panax notoginseng, Atractylodes macrocephala, and Rehmannia root). The main diseases controlled are some fungal diseases. For the control of diseases of other crops such as sorghum, quinoa, sunflowers, cassava, grapes, pomegranates, walnuts, long-stalked almonds, zucchini, green vegetables, peppers, platycodon, scutellaria, honeysuckle, forsythia, pinellia, polygonatum, cotinus, rubber, andrographis paniculata, boxwood, and caragana, Bacillus subtilis and its mixed products have certain development potential and broad market prospects.

In summary, as a product for the prevention and control of agricultural fungal diseases, Bacillus subtilis will continue to be welcomed by scientific research institutions, pesticide manufacturers, grain farmers, fruit farmers, vegetable farmers, medicinal farmers and tea farmers in the future, especially by plant protection integrated prevention and control service organizations. With the increase in the number of Bacillus subtilis registration certificates, the development of new environmentally friendly formulations, the in-depth application of mixed products, the expansion of prevention and control targets and the expansion of the scope of applied crops, Bacillus subtilis and its mixed products will have certain development and utilization value in the future plant protection market, and their future development prospects are promising.
